French Animal Genetics is a unique heritage in the world, a source of biodiversity but also the foundation of our food biodiversity.
France benefits from an exceptional situation, due to the great variety of geo-climatic zones found across its territory. Throughout its history, French livestock farming has thus built up an exceptional genetic heritage, in symbiosis with the regions where it developed — with nearly 50 breeds of cows, 58 of sheep, 14 of goats, 40 pig breeds and hybrid varieties, 53 breeds of horses and donkeys, 11 species of poultry, and 17 species of fish, shellfish and crustaceans.
A diversity that is almost unique in the world, which provides an advantage in the necessary adaptability of agricultural production systems to a changing world. This diversity of French genetics is also the foundation of our food sovereignty, because it guides the choices of the breeding models we wish to promote — safer in terms of health, respectful of the environment and the well-being of animals as well as farmers, while remaining productive enough to feed more than 67 million French people and contribute to feeding 7 billion human beings on Earth.
